Moosehead Lake Yacht Club

Dear Friends,

I take great pleasure in welcoming you and your family back to the lake for the 2023 Moosehead Lake Yacht Club season.  The purpose of our club is “to support the variety of summer boating and outdoor activities afforded by the Moosehead Lake region, and to host boating and social events conducive to such activities”.

We start the season off with the ever-popular Commodore’s Reception on Saturday, July 8 aboard the Katahdin.  On July 22 we travel to Rockwood for the Pig Roast at the camp of Telford and Karen Allen, where dedicated cooks will begin cooking before sunrise for serving at 5:00 pm.  On August 5 we boat to the summer home of Dick and Chris Brown, Sand Bar Island, for the Kineo Cup Competition, which is always entertaining.  Our Annual Meeting and Dinner will be held at the Moosehead Aero Marine Hangar on August 19, with lobster and steak, and a highlight video of photos taken during the summer.

On Thursdays, informal kayak trips and day hikes are planned (weather permitting) around our region.  These are great family friendly opportunities to see remote areas within easy driving distance and require moderate physical activity.  We also have a gardening group that maintains the flower beds at the Moosehead Marine Museum.  There is an opportunity in September to participate in shuttling pilots who come to the Fly-in.

Our events are opportunities for making lasting friendships and memories, the planning and execution of which takes many hands to pull off successfully.  I was recently given a letter written by Lou Hilton to area boaters, likely sent out in the early 1970’s.  In it, Lou states “It should be stressed here that the Annual Dues (of the Yacht Club) obtains for the member one thing right away; the liability to be called to help”.  This idea continues today.

Our club is a volunteer organization.  We currently have 176 members, with a waiting list of 8 waiting to join.  At the core are seven people serving as our Board of Trustees, Treasurer and Secretary/Historian, who work all year to organize events.  There is a committee for each party, and we have many volunteers who take on multiple roles.

The Board of Trustees is issuing a call to our members for help on the board, committees, informal outings, or any way you can to support our stated purpose.  You can contact me or anyone on the Board or email us at mlyc.me@gmail.com for more information.

Rachel and I look forward to seeing you at the Commodore’s Reception on Saturday, July 8 as well as other events around the lake during the season.

Zed Howell,
